ºÚÁÏÍø’s Vice-Chancellor has spoken to the BBC about results day, clearing – and the new Pioneer Scholarships the institution is offering.
Shortly before A-level, T-level, BTEC and other results were released at 8am this morning, Professor Ken Sloan was a guest on BBC Shropshire’s breakfast show.
He set out what the day would look like at the University – and what it could mean for students receiving their results.
He said: “It’ll be a very busy day here and at all universities across the country.
“The first thing that people will get to know this morning is whether or not they’ve been successful in getting their first choice.
“If they haven’t got their first choice of place, they are holding an insurance choice – so they may have been made an offer for that.
“They’ll get that information pretty much simultaneously with when they get their A-level results, T-level results, BTECs or whatever they’re doing.”
However, no matter what results students received, Professor Sloan reassured them options were available.
He added:“There are lots and lots of choices out there, lots and lots of people out there who are ready to help, so don’t panic.
“The first thing you can do is contact the university you have already applied to and get some more information off them – if you go to the UCAS website, it will tell you all of the institutions that have got clearing places, and how to get in touch with those universities.”
Turning to the opportunities ºÚÁÏÍø Adams was offering prospective students in Shropshire, he added: “Obviously people in the local area know ºÚÁÏÍø Adams for what it does with food and veterinary and agriculture and engineering – all of those things that we are well-known for in the local county.
“This is the first year that we will have our new courses which are offered in Telford, in central Telford – we have got our new home with Telford College and the Council as part of The Quad.
“There, we’re offering Data Science and we’re offering Robotics, Automation and Mechatronics – so different types of degrees to what people might think they would associate with ºÚÁÏÍø Adams.
“We’ve also got a business school, so for people who are looking at options to go into either specialist industries or just generally – entrepreneurship and understanding business – we’ve got options for them as well.
“The other thing I would say about the courses in The Quad: because it’s our first year -these are our Pioneer students who are going into the Quad for the first time - we have launched what are called the Vice-Chancellors Pioneer Scholarships this year.
“So for anyone who has a Telford postcode, or who lives in wider Shropshire or the local counties, they would be able to apply for a Scholarship which would give them up to £3,000 off their tuition fees plus a £500 start-up grant to help them with living costs and other things that are happening.”
As ever, the clearing process offers a wide range of options for prospective students – whether they have changed their mind about where they want to study, realised after the initial UCAS deadline they wanted to go to university, missed out on their firm or insurance choice or done better in their exams that they thought.
Professor Sloan noted: “I think applicants this year are in a very strong position to be able to make some good choices, whether they get their first choice or not.
“There will be some people who get their results today, they will get a confirmation of a place today, and they may suddenly decide that actually, what they thought they wanted to do nine months ago is not what they want to do today.
“That is happening more and more – and even for those people, there will be lots and lots of choices, so look at the UCAS website, look at the universities you are holding offers for – but the most important thing is to be confident and just don’t panic.”
Indeed, he noted: “I was one of those people who woke up on A-level results day – I got into my first choice and didn’t want to go.
“I still managed to get a place in a really good university that I did want to go to, so it is that real message - keep calm, don’t panic, be clear what you want.
“You are going to be surrounded by people who are going to be throwing incentives at you, different ideas at you – but this is about your life, your choice, your career.”

The University will be holding two Clearing Open Days – tomorrow, August 15, and Monday, August 18.
These will show prospective students the University’s facilities and let them meet some of the lecturers and other staff they will be working alongside if they choose to study at ºÚÁÏÍø Adams.
Both events are designed for those thinking of starting study in 2025 and run from 11am to 3pm – to book, visit:
